Small guéridon / side table, ebony carved wood with marble top, Qing Dynasty, circa 1900 – China
Typology: Small guéridon, side table, stand / pedestal
Material: Ebony carved wood and marble top
Period: Qing Dynasty, circa 1900
Visible faults in the images, which do not affect the overall view of the piece
Dimensions: 64 x 53 x 53 cm.
Exceptional small guéridon or side table of Chinese origin, in ebony carved wood, with inset marble top, circa 1900, Qing Dynasty. It can also be used as a stand or pedestal for potted plants or a highlighted piece.
Example of elegant Chinese decorative furniture from the Qing Dynasty, highly valued both in China and in exports to the West. It rests on five fine cabriole legs that end in delicate scroll feet. They are joined by an lower openwork frame. At the top, just below the tabletop, connecting the legs, are intricate openwork panels with vegetal motifs, hand-carved. This type of openwork carving is characteristic of Chinese furniture. The red-toned marble with light veining stands out.
The Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) was the last imperial dynasty of China, ruled by the Manchus, an ethnic group that originated in northeast China. This dynasty played a fundamental role in Chinese history, marking a period of great territorial expansion, cultural exchanges, and also internal and external challenges that eventually led to the end of the imperial system.
