Ryuichi Kaneko
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography/1996/japanese,English/150*210*30
This three-part catalog was published on the occasion of the 1996 exhibition “Japanese Photography: Inner and Outer Forms” at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the first comprehensive museum of photography in Japan, which was established in the 1980s and opened as a temporary facility in 1990. The museum began collecting photographs in the late 1980s, and by the time of this exhibition, it had amassed approximately 14,000 works, mainly original prints, of which approximately 70% were by Japanese photographers. The exhibition, which was composed and displayed from this rich collection of Japanese photographs, is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers the period from the arrival of photography to the end of the Pacific War in 1945, Part 2 focuses on the postwar period of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and Part 3 covers the period from the 1980s to the mid-1990s. The volume begins with a text (in English and Japanese) by Ryuichi Kaneko and other specialists from the Museum of Photography, followed by illustrations of the works throughout the volume, and biographies of the photographers and captions of their works at the end of the volume.
