Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox brass icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker – 19th century
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (Nicholas of Myra), rendered in high relief. The richly ornate frame and refined detailing make this a characteristic example of a Russian cast icon from the 19th century.
Description
The icon shows Saint Nicholas depicted frontally as a bishop, recognizable by his liturgical vestments and omophorion with cross motifs. With his right hand he performs the blessing gesture, while in his left hand he holds an open gospel book. Above his shoulders are Christ and the Mother of God, who respectively hand him the gospel book and the omophorion. This depiction refers to orthodox tradition in which Saint Nicholas, after the Council of Nicaea, was confirmed in his episcopal office by Christ and Mary.
The richly decorated floral surround and the finely worked details of the vestments, the face, and the gospel book testify to the craftsmanship of specialized Russian ateliers. The brass surface, through age, has developed a handsome natural patina that gives the relief extra depth and character.
