Great Britain - 1840 1d Mulready Lettersheet, with red Maltese Cross postmark.

A good example of the GB Victoria One Penny Mulready Lettersheet from 1840. The Mulready covers & envelopes were introduced on the same day as the Penny Black postage stamps, on 6th May 1840. Sir Rowland Hill considered that most people would prefer to use the pre-printed Mulready sheets, rather than the new postage stamps. History shows us that, in fact, the new postage stamps were far more popular. This example of the Mulready Lettersheet has a Red Maltese Cross cancellation on the front, with a red dated postmark on the reverse of 20 November 1840. There is also a faint black receiving Postmark. Condition is good, with no foxing, but there are a few creases as to be expected. The fold lines are still robust, unlike many of these covers, where the folds are often very weak or detached. Please see the various photographs for full details, as they are an important part of the description. No reserve, so must be worth a few bids!
