Description from the seller
Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass icon depicting Saint Antipas, rendered in high relief and richly decorated with deep-blue enamel. The refined detailing, the ornate floral surround, and the bright enamel accents make this a characteristic example of a Russian cast icon from the 19th century.
Description
The icon shows Saint Antipas frontally depicted as a bishop, recognizable by his long beard, liturgical vestments and a richly adorned omophorion. With his right hand he makes the traditional blessing gesture, while in his left hand he holds a closed Gospel book. Above his head are Christ and the Mother of God depicted, a common motif on Orthodox episcopal icons that refers to the divine confirmation of the episcopal office.
The background and surround are richly decorated with deep-blue enamel and refined floral ornaments, which form a beautiful contrast with the warm brass relief. The combination of detailed casting and the colorful enamel decoration is typical of high-quality Russian cast icons from the 19th century.
