Beautiful Russian Orthodox brass crucifix icon featuring a depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ, executed in high relief. The sober execution without enamel and the strongly developed patina give the cross an authentic historic appearance, characteristic of early Russian forged crosses.
Description
The cross shows centrally the crucified Christ, depicted with a bowed head and an anatomically refined body form. Above the crossbeam there is a depiction of God the Father, surrounded by angels and cherubim, emphasizing the heavenly dimension of the crucifixion. The ends of the crossbeam bear the traditional inscriptions found on Orthodox cross icons.
The cross is made of solid cast brass with richly worked relief and a beautiful natural patina that has developed over the centuries. Such crosses were used as home icons or as personal devotional objects within the Russian Orthodox tradition.
