ART NOUVEAU POCKET COMB WITH EMBOSSED CASE (EUROPE, c. 1900): We present at auction a refined antique dressing accessory, representative of the elegance and personal care of the Belle Époque. It is a jaunty pocket comb or handbag comb, accompanied by its custom protective case.
The rigid case shines with its exquisite repoussé metalwork in an Art Nouveau style. It features along its edges delicate repoussé motifs with organic, floral and scroll (rocaille) patterns that frame a smooth, mirror-polished central surface.
The comb fits perfectly into the case and has a matching metal spine to facilitate its extraction. The teeth are made of a material with a beautiful veined pattern (tortoiseshell or high-quality vintage celluloid) which, when exposed to light, reveals a spectacular translucence in amber and deep caramel tones.
Condition (Expert Review)
The piece is in magnificent overall decorative condition for an antique over 100 years old:
Metal: The case retains a bright polish. It shows minuscule micro-scratches on the surface and the soft patina of time, with no serious dents that would deform the case. (No silver hallmarks were detected at a glance, so it is auctioned as white metal/silver-plated).
Comb: The teeth are in enviable condition. It maintains structural integrity without evident breaks, something very rare in old combs made of this material.
