Viking sword with an ornamented bronze guard and pommel, dating from the 9th to the 11th century A.D., about 90.3 cm long, in excavated condition with age-related wear, authentic/original.

Viking sword with ornamented bronze guard and pommel
9th-11th century A.D.
A Viking iron sword with a long straight blade tapering gradually to a pointed tip. The grip is narrow, widening slightly towards the guard. The hilt is fitted with an ornamented bronze guard, decorated with incised interlaced scrollwork. The bronze pommel has a broad decorated base plate with matching incised ornament and a lobed upper knop formed of rounded segments.
The sword is in excavated condition, with age-related surface wear, corrosion, encrustation, and minor losses, yet retaining a clear and impressive weapon form.
An excellent Viking weapon with richly ornamented bronze hilt fittings, ideal for collectors of Norse antiquities, early medieval arms, or archaeological ironwork.

Provenance: Private North German collection, 1970s-1990s. Earlier in Swiss art gallery.
