Burndept Ethovox 1924 Horn Loudspeaker, manufactured in 1924; physical condition: reasonable and imperfect; functional condition: not tested.
Description from the seller
Rare and antique horn loudspeaker "Burndept Ethovox", manufactured in 1924 by the prestigious British company Burndept Wireless Ltd. Originally released in 1923, this model became one of the most iconic audio accessories for early valve radio receivers (such as the famous Ethophone line). This classic speaker, from the pioneering broadcasting era, does not have the original base and has been fitted with a suction-cup base to attach to surfaces (a very well-done job). The paint on the horn seems not to be original - see photos.
Burndept operated in Blackheath, London, from 1921 to 1931, and was one of the founding companies of the original British Broadcasting Company (BBC) in 1922. While its radios used the trade name Ethophone, the loudspeakers were designated Ethovox. Because of the high manufacturing quality, these pieces are today highly sought after by vintage radio collectors and are exhibited in various historical archives worldwide. Burndept produced some of the era's finest radios, from small crystal sets to powerful four-valve receivers with loudspeakers. They were the first to place household radio receivers in cars, airplanes, houseboats, and yachts.
The company built a delivery van in the shape of a giant Ethophone V model (see photos) and mounted a receiver on a handcart with an antenna and loudspeakers. Unfortunately, like many pioneering organizations, Burndept realized that the large market was migrating to manufacturers less interested in novelty and more in low prices and mass production. In 1927, the company faced serious financial difficulties and went into bankruptcy.
Although the speaker does not have the original base, it is an excellent addition to any antique radio collection or to decorate a space.
Images 3, 10, 17, 24 and 25 are for information only and are not part of the Lot.
