Maria Magdalena, 1921, oil painting on canvas, Germany, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
An old, beautiful, high-quality oil painting from 1921 depicting Mary Magdalene.
This finely worked, high-quality oil painting from the early 20th century was created after the famous motif, produced during his stay in Rome, by the German-Baltic court painter Carl Timoléon von Neff.
Technique: Oil on canvas
Dimensions with frame: 72 x 59 x 5 cm
Dimensions without frame: 55 x 42 cm
Dating/label: Clearly dated 1921 by hand-written pencil note on the back (other notes partly illegible); there is also a adhesive label with a caption on the reverse side.
A departure from traditional, often gloomy depictions of penance is evident as the Saint here appears in a flowing white-and-blue robe with a transfigured, heavenward gaze. The work stands out for its soft lighting against an atmospherically darkened clouded background. The face is painted with remarkable delicacy and captivates with its expressive, nuanced gaze.
Framed in a representative, deep-black frame with a gold inner lip. The frame shows age-related wear and has been partially restored in places. It is not part of the auction, but will be included with the painting as a free bonus to the buyer and shipped together.
From my private collection
The painting, with signs of age, is in good condition.
Shipping options:
Shipping within Europe including insurance and tracking number with secure, suitable packaging
Or pickup
(Note: The parcel will be shipped only within Europe due to its large overall dimensions. Shipping costs to destinations outside Europe could exceed €300 and will be charged separately. Therefore, the package will not be shipped outside Europe.)
