Authentic and ancient Dan Zakpai mask from the Ivory Coast
A raw expressive power, between ritual force and radical modernity
Dan mask, Côte d’Ivoire. Zakpai typology, an anthropomorphic mask with a strong expressive charge, belonging to a register that is both spectacular and deeply rooted in the social and initiatory traditions of the Dan.
The face is built around a simple structure but with formidable efficiency. The domed, almost hemispherical forehead dominates the composition and immediately captures the gaze. A horizontal red band, crossing the face at eye level, introduces a striking visual rupture. Circular, ringed eyes, almost mechanical in their treatment, contrast with the organic volumes of the rest of the mask. This frontal, almost brutal, quality gives the whole a presence that is immediate, almost hypnotic.
The open mouth, with powerfully sculpted lips, enhances the expressive character of the piece. It seems fixed in speech, a breath or an address. The beard in fibers, still present, reinforces the living dimension of the mask, recalling its worn and danced use. The whole is animated, incarnated, far from a mere sculpted object: it is a presence.
