Console table - Wood - Italy - Blackamoor console

Beautiful Italian, 20th-century wooden Blackamoor console in good condition with age and signs of use. Beautifully decorated. At the back there are slots/holes to mount the console to the wall. A sticker is present from a previous auction.

Blackamoor figures (Italian: moretto, moretti) are stylized depictions of dark-skinned Africans used in decorative art, sculpture, jewelry and heraldry. They were especially popular in the early modern period (roughly between 1500 and 1800) and represented the 'exotic' and mysterious. The term "blackamoor" or "black Moor" was once a general term for Black people in English, 'formerly without derogatory meaning', as the Oxford English Dictionary states. The style is now by some regarded as racist and culturally insensitive. Nevertheless Blackamoor pieces are still made, mainly in Venice, Italy.
