Description from the seller
Ancient Lacquered and Gilded Wooden Base "Ecce Homo" - 18th/19th Century
Fascinating and rare antique wooden base from a high era (likely late 18th or early 19th century), entirely handmade and decorated. The object originally began as a supporting base for a sacred sculpture, most probably a bust in terracotta, wax, or polychrome wood depicting Christ in suffering.
The front part is adorned with a refined dark reserve on which stands the inscription in golden capital letters "ECCE HOMO", framed by delicate ornamental motifs of gold volutes. The structure features an elegantly shaped and moulded line, typical of liturgical furnishings or private devotional pieces from the Baroque/Neoclassical period. On the top surface there is the original hole intended to receive the statue’s fixing pin.
The piece is presented in good overall condition proportionate to its age, with the normal and fascinating signs of time that guarantee its authenticity. It shows a splendid original patina, with widespread and characteristic flaking of the paint layer, small losses of gilding and of the plaster preparation, which only enhance its antique flavor and historical value. No recent invasive restoration detected.
Material: Carved wood, plastered, lacquered and gold-leaf gilded.
Era: 18th - 19th Century.
Origin: Italy / Continental Europe.
Dimensions: 36x18x8 cm; weight 2.2 kg
Ideal lot for collectors of sacred art, high-era pieces, and ancient sculpture. A piece with great atmosphere and personality, perfect also as a standalone decorative element or to complete a contemporaneous statue.
