Black opals, just like their differently colored counterparts, occur as rounded to knobbly masses with no recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually becomes apparent only after this mass is cut and polished.
Characteristically for this form of opals is their opalescence, which is expressed in an intense rainbow sheen. Moreover, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it its name.
Black opals form, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
