Studio ceramic set MW / Polly ’82 in Raku and Brutalist style, dating from 1982, Netherlands origin, made of steengoed, in good condition with small signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
Studio ceramics set – MW / Polly ’82 – Raku & Brutalist style
Special handmade studio ceramics from 1982, comprising a three-piece set. On the bottom, hand-signed in the clay with the monogram MW, the name Polly and dated ’82.
The set consists of a low bowl in the Raku technique and two matching vases/mugs in a more primitive, brutalist form language. Together they form a characterful studio group in which craft and experimental ceramics clearly come together.
Style & technique
The low bowl is executed in the Raku technique, recognizable by the characteristic craquelé and the dark smoke traces that formed during firing.
The two vases/mugs have a robust, hand-formed look with scratched geometric patterns and symbolism, fitting within a primitive-brutalist style.
Dimensions & condition
Raku bowl (low bowl)
Dimensions: Ø 14.0 cm × 8.5 cm high
Condition: Good condition, with typical Raku craquelé and smoke traces
Wide vase / mug
Dimensions: Ø 8.5 cm × 10.5 cm high
Condition: Good, original condition
Tall vase / mug
Dimensions: Ø 7.3 cm × 13.0 cm high
Condition: At the top edge a crack of about 1 cm. This is likely a firing error (shrinkage crack) arising during firing in the kiln and not later use damage
Distinctive whole
An expressive studio set in which Raku technique and Brutalist ceramics come together, with clear traces of the artisanal making process and the experimental signature of the atelier.
