Description from the seller

Zande (Azande) anthropomorphic figure – DRC / North Congo–Sudan region

Superb Zande figure, with a style that is immediately recognizable and highly sought after by collectors of Central Africa. Azande works of quality, both sober and powerful, are today especially valued: their relative rarity on the market, combined with a very modern aesthetic, explains the constant interest they provoke.

This sculpture captivates with its graceful forms and balance: a diamond-faceted head, simplified yet perfectly controlled volumes, and an asserted frontal gaze that gives the piece a strong presence on display. The face, deliberately pared down, reads like a minimal mask: small eyes inset/perforated, discreet mouth, and a central ridge that structures the entire face. The body, compact and slightly rounded, contrasts with the massive legs, carved into blocks, reinforcing the impression of stability and a sculptural “totem.”

The patina is deep, ancient, and nuanced, with shiny areas of handling and more matte passages that reveal the warmth of the wood. This living surface highlights the modeling and confirms a piece that feels “lived” with immediate charm. An ideal work for a collection focused on Azande aesthetics, strong forms, and sculptures with a distinctly contemporary reading.

Presentation of our expert house:

Based in Belgium, our expert and sales house has been guiding collectors and families for years, with a simple approach: seriousness, transparency, and service. We enjoy a solid reputation among tribal art enthusiasts and are among the reference sellers on Catawiki, where we count ourselves among the oldest dealers (over 8 years).

We have authenticated and arranged the liquidation and dispersal of dozens of family collections, and sold thousands of objects in partnership with individuals, notaries, successions, inheritances, and deaccessions. Our track record speaks for itself: several hundred valuations with nearly 100% positive reviews, an indicator that surpasses any rhetoric about our commitment and reliability.

Pieces that have passed through our hands today appear in prestigious collections and, for some, have joined museum institutions — a testament to the quality and coherence of our selection throughout the year. We regularly offer auction sales without reserve.

Express shipping: dispatch within 24 hours, insured, with tracking and extremely careful and secure packing.

Contact 7 days a week: we respond quickly and remain at your disposal to advise and document objects during sale preparation.
