Description from the seller
Cesare Ciani (Florence, February 28, 1854 – Florence, February 13, 1925)
“Rustic Landscape with a Loggia”
Oil on cardboard
Work of 1917, signed
Measurements: 60 x 50 cm in a contemporaneous frame
Cardboard: 45 x 35 cm
Created in 1917, Rustic Landscape with a Loggia represents one of the most characteristic types of Cesare Ciani’s mature output, a painter belonging to the generation of the Post-Macchiaioli and a pupil of Giovanni Fattori. In this work the artist abandons any descriptive intention to focus on the atmospheric rendering of space, entrusting light and the painting matter with the task of building the image.
The composition depicts an open loggia overlooking the countryside, probably part of an ancient Tuscan rural residence. The sturdy columns rhythmically mark the space of the perspective, creating an elegant play of solids and voids that guides the eye toward the landscape beyond the balustrade. The few decorative elements – terracotta pots and the vegetation that peeks through the openings – help convey a sense of quiet and intimate harmony.
The palette, dominated by warm earthy tones, ochres, browns and subdued greens, is brightened by sudden white accents that capture the Mediterranean light. The brushwork, broad and substantial, appears free and synthetic: surfaces are not meticulously described but suggested through a vibrant and tactile application of paint, a hallmark of Ciani’s more personal phase, when the Macchiaioli legacy evolves toward a more modern and expressive sensibility.
The work does not seek a scenographic effect, but rather returns the suspended atmosphere of a place lived in, immersed in the silence of the countryside. The architecture of the loggia thus becomes the link between the space built by man and the surrounding nature, in a balance of light, shadow and color that reveals the artist’s refined landscape sensitivity.
Dated 1917, the painting belongs to the period of Cesare Ciani’s full maturity, when the Florentine master develops an increasingly concise and luminous painting, primarily devoted to Tuscan landscapes, rural views and everyday environments—subjects that earned him the praise of critics and collectors already during his lifetime.
Overall, Rustic Landscape with a Loggia constitutes an interesting testimony to Ciani’s poetics: an intimate painting, built on the perception of light and the solidity of composition, capable of transforming a simple corner of the countryside into a scene of intense lyrical suggestion.
