*Peridot* is the August birthstone and a gem variety of the mineral olivine.
*Key characteristics:*
- *Color*: Distinctive lime green to olive green. The color comes from iron in the crystal structure, so peridot is always some shade of green — no heat treatment to change it. Larger stones tend to be a deeper olive.
- *Chemical formula*: $(Mg, Fe)_2SiO_4$ — magnesium iron silicate
- *Hardness*: 6.5 to 7 on Mohs scale. So it’s durable for earrings, pendants, and rings, but can scratch if it rubs against harder gems like quartz or sapphire.
- *Luster*: Vitreous, glassy. It has a bright, lively look.
- *Refractive index*: 1.65 – 1.69 with strong birefringence. That’s why it has good sparkle even without ideal cuts.
- *Formation*: Forms deep in the Earth’s mantle and is brought up by volcanic activity. It’s also one of the few gems found in meteorites — “space peridot.”
- *Clarity*: Usually eye-clean. Inclusions are rare compared to emerald.
Fun fact: Because of that iron content, peridot glows bright green under UV light and looks the same color in both daylight and artificial light. Most green gems shift tone, but peridot doesn’t.
