Icon - Feast day icon - Wood - No Reserve

Splendid Russian festive icon, dating from the late 19th century. It is an egg tempera painting on a gypsum ground on wooden panels. The ground is silver, covered by a beautifully preserved gold lacquer; the decorative motifs in the corners and borders imitate the era's metal *oklad* (embellishments) with punch decorations. It measures 31 x 26 cm. It consists of three panels with two reinforcing crosspieces at the ends. It was purchased at Hargesheimer Kunstauktionen in Dusseldorf: the world’s leading icon auction held twice a year. Original purchase documentation is available upon request.
