Tang Dynasty Ancient Chinese terracotta guard statuette, a hollow‑moulded male figure wearing a mid‑length tunic and hood‑like headdress, 25 cm high, with traces of orange and black pigment, from private collection, acquired in 2000.
Description from the seller
A finely hollow-moulded terracotta Chinese Tang period statuette of a male, possibly a guard. He is wearing a mid-length tunic with elbow-length sleeves. He also wears a hood-like headpiece. His one arm is held by the side and the other arm is bent at the elbow, hand to his abdomen. There is a perforation to the hand, which would possibly have once held a staff-like weapon, or used for offerings, such as incense. His face has been carved with high precision, with his eyes, nose, and mouth carefully detailed. Traces of the original orange and black pigmentation are still visible to the face. Some chips and scratches to the surface as consistent with its age. Chip to the side of the head, on the right hand side.
Grave goods were an important status symbol in ancient China, so the affluent and important would be accompanied in their travels through the afterlife with numerous depictions of people, items and animals. Such terracotta figures were made for the service and entertainment of the owner, ensuring that their journey in the underworld was a happy one.
Measurements: H 25cm x W 6cm
Provenance: From the collection of a West Country gentleman, formed in 1970s.
