Description from the seller

Giant Triton Charonia tritonis

Collector's shell

The giant Triton Charonia tritonis, also named Triton conch or Trumpet of Neptune, is a large prosobranch gastropod mollusk with a long spiral shell.

This shell is depicted at the lips of the sea gods to whom it served as a horn and is used as such by seafaring peoples.

The conch Triton is described in widely read reference works as the most striking and best known of marine gastropods.

The Giant Triton is widespread, though rare, throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea.

Like all mollusks, tritons possess a muscular ventral foot, often ciliated, which plays a role in locomotion.

They have a mantle that envelops the dorsal visceral mass and secretes the shell composed mainly of calcium carbonate.

The shell of most individuals is dextral, meaning its coiling is clockwise when viewed from the apex.

Adults can reach an exceptional size of 50 cm.

Magnificent conch, large shell in excellent condition, indispensable in the collection of any conchologist or cabinet of curiosities!

Dimensions:
Longueur 23 cm
Largeur 11 cm
Hauteur 10 cm
