An attractive example of one of the most iconic large silver coins of early modern Greece.

Greece, King Otto, 5 Drachmai 1833-A, Type I, struck at the Paris Mint. This is the catalogued “Grave Accent” variety, with a grave accent between the letters “Ο” and “Θ” in the obverse legend.

The obverse features the youthful portrait of King Otto facing right, surrounded by the legend “ΟΘΩΝ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ”. The reverse displays the crowned royal coat of arms within a mantle, together with the denomination and date.

This distinctive variety is catalogued as Hellas 111a and is especially interesting to collectors of the coinage of King Otto.
