Description from the seller
Beautiful monumental antique cast-iron mortar with pestle – France, 17th/18th century
This large and beautifully seasoned antique mortar (pestle), originating from a monastery, testifies to craftsmanship and is entirely made of solid cast iron. The mortar has a classic, slightly flared shape with a sturdy, wide foot rim and is equipped with two robust knobby ears (handles). At the bottom of the cylinder there are subtle, contoured profile lines cast into the iron.
This decorative piece is supplied including the original, heavy cast-iron pestle that features a characteristic, rounded head with which herbs, spices or medicinal substances were ground by hand in the past.
The cast iron has developed a wonderfully aged surface and superb patina through the centuries, with a beautiful play of light-rusty and dark iron tones, giving the object an unmistakable historical charm.
In short, a characterful piece of history that fits perfectly in a country kitchen, a rugged interior, or as a unique collectible.
IMPORTANT: Given the size and especially the weight, this object must be picked up.
