Winter & Hoerbelt (XX) - Madonna

Winter/Hoerbelt — "Madonna", 1999 Acrylic resin cast, unique work Artists: Wolfgang Winter & Berthold Hörbelt Title: "Madonna" (confirmed by the artists) Year: 1999 Material: Acrylic resin, translucent Height (figure): ca. 130 cm Height (with base): ca. 200 cm Width: ca. 40 cm (with outstretched arm) Weight: ca. 10 kg Execution: Unique cast from a flexible negative mould The figure was cast from liquid synthetic resin poured into a deliberately flexible negative mould — a process that makes each resulting work a completely unique entity. The warm amber and rosé tones of the translucent material lend the figure an almost luminous presence. The outstretched arm is an integral part of the original mould, not a subsequent addition (see artist' confirmation). Of all the figures produced in this early series, this exemplar belongs to the more elegant formations — its silhouette prompted an immediate association with a Gothic Madonna, which led to its acquisition and its title, confirmed by the artists themselves. About the artists: Winter/Hoerbelt are known primarily for their large-scale three-dimensional objects made from beverage crates, widely exhibited in public spaces across Europe (www.winter-hoerbelt.de). This early series of acrylic resin figures represents a rare and particularly poetic chapter in their body of work. Provenance: Acquired directly in the artists' studio, 1999, through personal contact. Title and authenticity confirmed in writing by the artists (May 2026). Condition: Very good. Minor age-appropriate surface marks consistent with careful private use over 25 years.
