Impressive Guéré or Wé mask from Côte d'Ivoire. This work exudes a powerful, primal force. That is the primary purpose of these masks: to evoke fear and awe. In case of clan conflicts, these masks come out. They can settle disputes without blood being shed or the honor of a clan being trampled.

This mask bears a hard, stern expression; its gaze is piercing, its slightly open mouth is menacing. It shows its teeth, which are metal. The volumes are deftly worked and typical of masks of this culture. It is covered with several layers of old paint. The colors are beautiful and vivid. Fabrics adorn the edge of the mask.
