Description from the seller
Clemens Briels, born in Son in 1946, is a highly sought-after artist both at home and abroad. His works are included in various renowned art collections, and he was selected as the first Dutch artist to be named Official Olympic Artist for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.
Behind Clemens Briels' artworks lies always a story; his works are small anecdotes from a counter-society. Clemens Briels developed his own style, ANTIPODISME: he would rather imagine the opposite of the stereotype, the learned. The viewer is confronted with a different, fantastical view of everyday things and is often surprised as a result.
Briels portrays the experiences he has gained in the Orient, the Caribbean, and North and South America. Moreover, traditional Central and South American music is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration. The Cuban son, mambo, merengue and the souk, with music tones lightly drizzled with a touch of eroticism, compel him to create intriguing paintings.
Clemens Briels' artworks are never time-bound and depict universal themes, cosmopolitan imaginings of daily life. Clemens Briels translates his experiences in his own way, in his own unique fantasy world. Color is the instrument; the story is his message. The artist provokes the viewer's imagination by showing different images than those we are expected to see. Because stereotypes have been learned by us and are not imaginative interpretations of surrounding things and events, the viewer is met with surprises.
