A carved wooden angel wing dating to the XVIII/XIX century in the Baroque architectural style from Italy, measuring 33 cm wide, 67 cm high and 6 cm thick, in good condition and unsigned.
Description from the seller
Grand wing of angel carved in polychrome wood – Architectural/Baroque element – 18th/19th century
Description
Important hand-carved angel wing in solid wood, likely from sacred furnishing or from a large polychrome wooden sculpture.
The carving presents a refined feather-work, made with notable plastic depth. On the back is still present the original metal fixing element, which testifies to its ancient placement on a statue, an altar or a processional machine.
The surface preserves traces of the polychromy and the original preparation, with a warm patina developed over time. There are ancient restorations, cracks from natural movement of the wood, wear and small losses coherent with the age of the work, without compromising its strong decorative impact.
Today it represents a fascinating collectible element, also ideal as wall decor in classical or contemporary settings.
Epoch
XVIII/XIX century (1700-1800)
Provenienza
Italy, probably Northern Italy.
Materiale
Carved wood with traces of original polychromy.
Dimensioni
* Height: 33 cm
* Length: 67 cm
* Thickness: 6 cm
Peso
2,2 kg
Condizioni
Good overall condition for its age. It shows period restorations, settling cracks, wear, abrasions of the polychromy and small losses, as documented in the photographs.
Note storiche
The carved wooden wings were distinctive elements of statues of angels, cherubs and allegorical figures used in altars, wooden choirs and processional machines between the 17th and 19th centuries. They were made separately from the body of the sculpture to facilitate carving and mounting, by means of robust pins or metal brackets, as still visible on this specimen.
The quality of the carving, the volume of the feathers and the presence of the original polychromy make these elements increasingly sought after both by sacred art collectors and by interior designers, who appreciate them as authentic decorative sculptures with strong historical character.
