Bronze gilded eagle on an Ionic column, titled Águila en Columna Jónica, dating from 1850–1900, made in France, in excellent condition, 20 cm high, 20 cm wide, 10 cm deep, and weighing 3 kg.
Description from the seller
It is a figure that perfectly condenses the Napoleonic III imaginary of the 19th century: solemn, symbolic, with that taste for classical theatricality reinterpreted in an ornamental key. The bronze-gilded eagle, with wings spread and body tense in full display, conveys an energy almost heraldic. It is not a naturalistic bird, but an emblem: strength, vigilance, authority. The modeling of the feathers, deep and textured, catches the light with a warm glow typical of ormolu, creating flashes that reinforce the sense of movement.
The piece rises on an Ionic column, a detail that anchors it directly in the classical architectural language so prized in the Second Empire. The capital, with its clearly defined volutes, acts as a transition between the column’s geometry and the organic power of the eagle. The lower pedestal, equally worked, provides visual and physical stability, coherent with the great weight of the ensemble: it is perceived as a solid object, with a commanding presence, intended to occupy a prominent place on a desk, in a living room, or in a display case.
The gilding preserves a magnificent uniformity, with no losses or stains, underscoring the quality of the bronze and the care with which it has been preserved. Taken together, the piece is a brilliant example of 19th-century historicism: a luxurious reinterpretation of the classical world, rich in symbolism and executed with impeccable craftsmanship.
Insured shipping and careful packaging.
