Description from the seller
Kees Verkade (1941–2020) is best known as a sculptor and draughtsman, but he also produced silkscreens. His graphic work aligns with his sculptural style: it’s about kinetic energy, human figures, and a certain dynamism.
In his silkscreens you often see fluid, expressive lines and strong, clear colors, causing the figures to leap almost “in motion.” Just like in his sculptures, it’s not about tight, realistic detail, but about the essence of a posture or moment.
His subjects are usually human figures, often in action or in an elegant, almost dancing pose. The silkscreens thus have a lively, theatrical atmosphere and seem as if they are capturing a movement.
Viewings possible. We have our own framing workshop (85th anniversary) and work with recognised restorers (Restauratoren Nederland). Please feel free to contact us via our website.
Kees Verkade (Haarlem, 1941) studied from 1958–1963 at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Although he initially wanted to become an advertising illustrator, he ultimately chose sculpture. His first exhibition at the Vishal yielded two sales to the Frans Hals Museum, after which he established a studio in Zandvoort. In 1966 he received his first commission from the municipality of Haarlem for the statue “Winkelen.” He later broke through internationally, especially in France and Monaco, where he had lived and worked since the late seventies. He had two sons from his first marriage and a daughter from his second.
