Antique rectangular wooden frame with carved and gold-leaf finish, in Salvator Rosa/baroque style, made in Italy in the 19th century, exterior 17 × 14 × 2 cm, interior 11 × 9 cm, good overall condition with minor age-related marks and wear to the gilding.
Description from the seller
Elegant Classic Carved and Gilded Wooden Box-Framed Frame – Salvator Rosa / Baroque Style – Italy, 19th Century
Fascinating rectangular antique frame in solid wood, finely carved and gilded, plausibly dating from the 19th century (with stylistic influences from the Italian 17th-18th centuries). The structure features a classic “box” profile, characterized by a skillful alternation of volumes and mouldings that taper inward to confer depth and prominence to the work housed inside.
Decorative Details and Craftsmanship
External and Internal Edges: Relief-decorated with ornamental acanthus and foliate motifs in a classical taste, finished with gilding that enhances the carved details.
Centre Band (Grove): Darkened, punch-marked finish with warm veins that create splendid play of light and tonal contrasts with the brighter parts of the gilding.
Back and Beading: The back shows the original woodwork and preserves the era’s metal nails inserted into the inner beading, historically used to fix the canvas or mirror.
Condition
The frame is in generally good condition for its age. It shows a splendid authentic patina and light signs of wear, small traces of age or minor losses on the gilding that do not compromise its aesthetics, but rather attest to its authenticity and historical charm. Solid and robust structure.
Versatility in Interior Design
A versatile antique piece, ideal for framing old paintings or period prints, or for being transformed into a sophisticated mirror frame. Also perfect as a decorative “empty” element in contemporary or eclectic design environments.
