Round dish with radiating compartments
China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century (Canton period, c. 1860-1890)
Porcelain with Famille Rose enamel decoration and gilded highlights, painted on a glaze
Dimensions: Diameter: 48 cm x Height: 7.5 cm
This spectacular 48 cm diameter format was particularly prized by the Western market in the 19th century for adorning large sideboards and centerpieces. The juxtaposition of palace scenes and nature motifs is part of the Cantonese décor tradition known as “thousand flowers” and “mandalas,” characterized by a saturation of the pictorial space (fear of emptiness) and a lively palette dominated by cassis pink, pale green, and bright gilded lines.
This large dish features a complex, richly narrative decoration, organized into radiating compartments arranged around a central medallion depicting a polychrome Buddhist lion (Qilin or Fu dog), a symbol of protection and prosperity, playfully handling a ball of brocade. This motif is framed by a wide honeycomb-pattern band (hexagonal diapre) in green and white, speckled with pink and blue florets.
The Radiant Panels (Marl and Cavetto) contain eight large fan-shaped cartouches that alternate regularly between two classic themes of Chinese art: scenes of literati and court life. Narrative, animated representations show dignitaries, scribes working at their desks with their scholar’s utensils, as well as an animated scene of riders on horseback (historical or romantic equestrian scene). Fauna and flora (Flowers and Birds): naturalistic panels depicting Manchurian cranes with longevity symbols among pines, songbirds perched on blossoming plum branches (meihua) and peonies, as well as squirrels or small rodents amid grapevines.
The outer border is highlighted by a gold and enamel frieze depicting scrolling foliage, stylized bats (symbols of happiness) and longevity pomegranates or peaches.
Condition: Good overall. Minor wear to the gilding at the edge, a crack and an old restoration visible on the marli.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
