Giant Triton Charonia tritonis
Collector’s shell
The giant Triton shell, also called the Triton trumpet shell or Neptune’s trumpet, is a large prosobranch mollusk with a long spiral shell.
This shell is depicted on the lips of the sea gods to whom it served as a trumpet, and was used as such by sailors.
The trumpet shell is described in public reference works as the most striking and well-known among marine gastropods.
The giant Triton is widespread, though rare, throughout the Indo-Pacific region, including the Red Sea.
Like all mollusks, Tritons possess a muscular ventral foot, often ciliated, which plays a role in locomotion.
They have a mantle that envelops the dorsally placed visceral mass and secretes the shell, composed mainly of calcium carbonate.
The shell of most individuals is dextral, i.e., its coil proceeds clockwise when viewed from above.
Adults can reach an exceptional size of 50 cm; this size is shown in the photo as 35 cm.
Splendid shell, large shell in excellent condition, indispensable in the collection of every conchologist.
Careful and insured shipping, no shipments to non-EU countries, no returns.
