Description from the seller
Small orthodox icon depicting Saint Pantaleon (Panteleimon), a physician and healer highly venerated in the Eastern tradition. The saint is portrayed frontal with classical attire and a medical tablet/case in the hand.
The icon features a golden background decorated with punched motifs, an ornamental element typical of devotional production from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century. Technique: tempera on wooden panel.
Conservation conditions are severely compromised: widespread losses of the preparatory layer and gilding, lateral abrasions, detachments and significant wear along the edges. Nevertheless, the saint’s face remains legible and decoratively pleasing.
Small in size, probably intended for private devotion or travel.
Small orthodox icon depicting Christ Pantocrator within a hammered metal riza/oklad decorated with floral and radiant motifs. The face of Christ is painted, while the metal covering surrounds the rest of the composition according to the Russian devotional tradition.
The icon is housed in a wooden case with a front glass, a typical feature of early twentieth-century domestic devotional icons.
Likely Russian production or from Eastern Europe, made between the late 19th and early 20th century. The covering appears to be silvered metal or alpacca, not solid silver in the photograph.
Condition: fair, with tarnishing, wear to the wooden support and age-related signs consistent with the period.
Small orthodox icon depicting a holy martyr, probably Paraskeva, Barbara or another female figure venerated in the Eastern tradition. The saint is depicted frontally with the martyr’s cross and veil, within a polygonally shaped, uniquely cut panel.
Technique: tempera on wooden panel with a golden-brown background and simple highlights. A popular Russian production for private domestic devotion.
The work shows widespread wear, abrasions and partial loss of the painted surface, but retains a pleasant antique patina and an unusual decorative format compared to classic rectangular panels.
Probable creation: Russia, second half of the nineteenth century.
