Description from the seller
Pentti Sarpaneva – Large “Pitsi (Revinnäinen)” bronze design pendant with original chain – Turun Hopea – Finland – ca. 1967–1973
Gorgeous authentic bronze design pendant from the iconic Pitsi (Revinnäinen) series, designed by the internationally renowned Finnish designer Pentti Sarpaneva (1925–1978) for Turun Hopea.
The Pitsi series was introduced in 1967 and is among the most recognizable designs of Finnish modernism. The name Pitsi means “lace” and refers to the open, sculptural structure of the design, inspired by traditional Finnish lacework. Sarpaneva translated this centuries-old artisanal technique into a powerful brutalist form language in cast bronze.
This large pendant is made of solid cast bronze and features an impressive architectural composition with characteristic round discs and a centrally raised ornament. The original long bronze chain forms one harmonious whole with the pendant and ensures that the design falls beautifully at chest height.
On the back the pendant is cast and signed:
FINLAND P. SARPANEVA
This confirms the authenticity of the design.
Pentti Sarpaneva is regarded as one of the most important Finnish jewelry designers of the twentieth century. His sculptural designs are now in museum collections and are collected worldwide for their unique combination of brutalist architecture, Scandinavian modernism and organic forms.
Dimensions
* Pendant: 8.5 × 4.5 cm
* Chain length: 62 cm
* Weight: 29.4 grams
Condition
The pendant is in very good vintage condition with a beautiful original patina and only light signs of use appropriate for its age. No cracks or restorations. The original bronze chain is completely intact.
