The original publication is divided chronologically into two volumes: • Volume I — extensive early guidance addressed to an international circle of students, friends, and collaborators. • Volume II — continued metaphysical reflections written as the world moved toward the Second World War. He did not merely own the book — it became one of his most treasured spiritual companions during the final year of his life. A Gift from Larry Geller In 1964, Elvis hired Larry Geller (see picture) as his personal hairstylist. Geller quickly became a close friend and spiritual mentor, introducing Elvis to Eastern philosophy, Theosophy, and New Age literature. He curated a large private library for Elvis and eventually gifted him a copy of Letters of Helena Roerich, published by the Agni Yoga Society. A Constant Travel Companion in 1977 By 1977, Elvis was struggling with severe health issues, exhaustion, and emotional strain. During this turbulent final year, he turned intensely to his spiritual books for comfort. He studied Roerich’s letters thoroughly, and the book became one of the few volumes he carried with him on tour. Well known photographs show Elvis holding this exact book while boarding his private jet, the Lisa Marie (see pictures). Elvis’s Handwritten Annotations Elvis was an active and engaged reader who frequently wrote in the margins of books that resonated with him. His personal copy of Letters of Helena Roerich is famous among collectors for containing numerous handwritten notes, underlinings, and reflections in black and blue ballpoint pen. Legacy and Value Because this book accompanied Elvis so closely during his final months, it has become an exceptionally valuable artifact of music history. After his passing, heavily annotated pages from volume 2 were sometimes separated, framed with photographs of Elvis holding the book, and sold at high end auctions for several thousand dollars. This is the complete copy of volume 1, including ALL Elvis’ annotations. Provenance of This Specific Copy This particular copy was originally obtained by David Stanley, Elvis’s stepbrother. He later sold it and it came into possession of Markus Henfling, a respected German Elvis expert and collector. Markus Henfling Based in Bayreuth, Henfling is widely regarded as one of Europe’s foremost authorities on Elvis’s military years in Germany. He has spent decades assembling a substantial private collection of rare Elvis artifacts, photographs, uniforms, original 1950s records, film posters, and unpublished material from the Friedberg and Bad Nauheim period. His collection has been featured in rotating exhibitions and special events across Thuringia and Bavaria, including well known gatherings such as Elvis Weekend and Elvis Forever in cities like Bischofsgrün, Erfurt, and Bayreuth. Henfling is also known for sharing unique, previously unpublished stories about Elvis’s time in Germany — including the remarkable claim that Elvis secretly visited the Bayreuth theater hall in 1958 or 1959. The Museum Project & Subsequent Sale Henfling was, at the time, working on establishing a permanent Elvis museum. To support this project, he acquired numerous exclusive and historically significant items, including this book. However, after organizational and financial difficulties during one of his events, he was forced to sell a large portion of his museum collection. He received assistance from the then chairman of Elvis Matters, and I was a board member and CEO of the company behind the fan club. This book was offered to me — and I purchased it for my personal collection.
