Dama con Cane, oil painting on copper by a French School artist, dated 1950–1960, depicting a female portrait with a dog in a classical style, in good condition; dimensions 25 × 20 cm.
Description from the seller
Refined female portrait with dog – Oil on copper plate – European School, late 19th century
Elegant oil painting on a copper plate depicting a young woman lying gracefully beside her dog, in a composition of great balance and delicate painting sensibility. The work stands out for the soft rendering of the flesh tone, the refined modeling of the face, and the skilful interpretation of the fabrics, elements that testify to an expert hand and solid academic training.
The female figure, dressed in a pure neoclassical-inspired gown, is portrayed in a serene and spontaneous attitude, while the small dog, a symbol of fidelity and domestic affection, lends the scene an intimate and romantic atmosphere. The background landscape, softly shaded, helps to create depth and a delicate chromatic balance, typical of European portraiture in the second half of the nineteenth century.
The technique on copper plate, a support particularly valued for its smooth and stable surface, allows extraordinary precision in the details and a brightness of colors superior to traditional canvas. Although more common in the 17th and 18th centuries, copper continued to be used in the 19th century by academic artists and collectors for works intended for refined clientele.
stylistically, the painting recalls the tradition of Romantic and European academic portraiture, drawing inspiration from the great English and French masters of the 18th century, such as Thomas Gainsborough, Sir Joshua Reynolds and Jean-Baptiste Greuze, whose pictorial language was widely adopted by artists of the second half of the 19th century. The sweetness of the expression, the elegance of the pose, and the quality of the brushwork also find affinity with the productions of painters of the French and Italian schools active in the Salon and European academies during the period.
The work presents a pleasant patina of time, coherent with the period of execution, and preserves a remarkable decorative impact, making it ideal for both collectors of antique painting and classic and prestigious interiors.
