Description from the seller
Rare Neo-Renaissance solid-wood folding conversation set in finely carved hardwood – Late 19th / Early 20th century
Elegant and rare conversation set composed of two folding armchairs and a coordinated coffee table, crafted in finely carved solid wood and attributable to European production dating from the late nineteenth century to the early years of the twentieth century.
The ensemble stands out for its distinctive architectural structure formed by parallel curved elements that create a refined sculptural effect. The cross-shaped bases with their characteristic wavy curve give the furniture a strong aesthetic personality and attest to high-quality artisanal work.
The two armchairs feature backrests richly carved with floral motifs, swirls, and Neo-Renaissance-style decorations. The armrests, elegantly pierced and ending in turned finials, complete a harmonious set with notable decorative impact. The central coffee table faithfully reproduces the seating design, creating a perfectly coordinated composition.
Particularly interesting is the folding structure of the two seats, a feature rather rare for this type of furniture. This ingenious construction system, typical of some productions from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, combines aesthetic value with practical functionality, increasing the historical and collectible interest of the lot.
The set retains the authentic charm of the period and a pleasant patina of age. Being a piece dating to the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century, it shows normal signs of wear due to age and use over the years. There are abrasions, wear to the original finish, small wood imperfections, and some termite holes, typical of antique furniture.
These characteristics are perfectly consistent with the furniture’s era and do not compromise in any way the structural stability of the two armchairs and the table, which remain solid, stable and usable. The traces of time contribute instead to increasing the historical charm and authenticity of the ensemble.
The quality of the carvings, the complexity of the construction, the rarity of the folding mechanism, and the originality of the design make this conversation set an interesting example of European historicist cabinetmaking, ideal for collectors, antique dealers, and fans of period furnishings.
