Japan 1959-1960 is a collection of works by Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990), one of the most famous photographers of the 20th century, whose masterpiece Love on he Left Bank, released in the 1950s, is one of the best works of his time. His subjective documentary style had a profound influence on future filmmakers such as Nobuyoshi Araki and Larry Clark. He was also known as a Japanophile, frequently visiting Japan and taking many snapshots during his lifetime, and in the 1980s he published a collection of his works entitled "De Ontdekking van Japan. This book is a compilation of images taken during Erskine's first visit to Japan in 1959-60.
