Samaritana al Pozzo, an 18th‑century oil painting on canvas from Italy by Scuola italiana, depicting Christ and the Samaritan woman, measuring 150 cm by 106 cm, in good condition, unsigned, sold with a wooden gold frame.
Description from the seller
Oil painting on canvas depicting the famous biblical episode of Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well (Gospel of John 4:1-42). The scene shows Christ, recognizable by his red robe and dark mantle, in the act of dialoguing with the Samaritan woman, depicted as bending over the well with one hand immersed in the water and her gaze directed toward him. Beside the well is placed a jar, an iconographic element that recalls the biblical tale and the theme of water as a symbol of salvation and eternal life.
The setting is outdoors, immersed in a landscape characterized by dense vegetation and a sky crossed by large masses of clouds that confer depth and luministic intensity to the composition. The scene is built according to a balanced dialogue of gestures and gazes between the two protagonists, emphasizing the moment of encounter and spiritual confrontation.
The work presents stylistic characteristics reminiscent of Baroque painting, with a marked use of chiaroscuro, a palette of warm tones, and particular attention to the psychological rendition of the characters. It is housed within a gilded wooden frame of classical taste.
