Beautiful English porcelain sculpture of the crowned Madonna and Child, made by Sutherland & Sons. Mary carries the Christ Child in her arms, while the Child holds the apple and bestows a blessing. The apple refers to Christ as ruler of the world, while Mary's crown emphasizes her role as Queen of Heaven.
The sculpture is rendered in white porcelain with a deep blue tunic, richly gilded decoration and an architecturally built plinth. The refined facial expression, the glossy glaze and the meticulous gilding are characteristic of the higher-quality English religious porcelain production from the 19th century.
