Description from the seller
Notre Dame des Victoires – plaster – France – late 19th, early 20th century
Professionally shipped – more than 950 five-star reviews worldwide.
This statue of Notre Dame des Victoires is made in plaster and stands out with its rich polychrome painting with gold accents. Notably, the large openwork crown of Mary and Jesus, a rendition that is rarely found on such devotional statues.
Mary is depicted as Queen of Heaven, crowned and cloaked in a mantle with gilded decoration. She stands on a cloud base with two cherubs at her feet and lovingly holds Jesus. Her posture radiates dignity and protection, while her gaze is tenderly fixed on the child.
Jesus, also crowned, stands on a world globe with stars, supported by a column of clouds. His outstretched pose emphasizes his universal presence and invitation to salvation.
Notre Dame des Victoires refers to the basilica of the same name in Paris, where the original statue is located. The crowns refer to King Louis XIII, to whom the victory was attributed, and explain the name of the sanctuary. Papal permission was required at the time to depict the figures with a crown.
Height 46 cm; in good condition with signs of wear and local paint degradation. The existing polychromy has been treated with a protective wax coating to fix and protect the finish. Also normal wear and age-related signs appropriate to the age. Made after the original by J. Cambos.
Please look closely at the photos, they are part of the description.
