What Katarina tells in sanguine and antique turquoise

These four studies and the unusually tall format of the painting were not created with the intention of beautifying living spaces, surgeries, or offices. But precisely because of its authenticity—created in a live session with a model and a quick, confident stroke—the work has the potential to provide a strong counterpoint in selected environments.

This begins with the selection and application of colors and materials. Sanguine and Conté are used for the sketches. The support is a recycled drawing paper in a typical appearance, mounted on a sturdy hardboard panel with a frame made of two side solid-wood strips, all in a bluish gray. The painting is delivered ready to hang, including a backside copper wire, on which the work can be mounted with just one hook and easily adjusted.

The four studies were created in Hilary Mullany’s class (Manchester) in the coastal town of Torrox in Andalusia. Katarina is a dancer, and it is amazing how she can hold difficult poses for up to 45 minutes. We are not dealing with something invented or painted from a photo, but with a moment captured from the interaction of model, eye, and pen.

The composition of the four sketches runs vertically in an unusual format, giving the image a narrative character, akin to the concept of a comic strip.

The visual counterweight to the lively line of Sanguine and Conté is the velvet antique turquoise in acrylic for the background. The carving-out technique presents the sketches on a tray with aesthetic tension, balanced by the inherently neutral colors.

Year: 2016. Signed on the front (bottom right, vertical).

Simone Wiener is a German artist, living and working in southern Spain. Trained textile designer with further education at the Istituto Europeo di Design, Milan, and art studies in Granada, Spain.
