decorative reliquary

Structure and Composition
The object is composed of two main elements in carved and braided wood, forming a cohesive unit:
The vessel (basket): It is a rounded wicker structure, serving as a receptacle. As seen in the photos, the lid is removable, allowing access to the interior.
The sculpted figures: The object is topped with a sculpted head fixed to the lid and features a second figure, of a similar style, applied to the outer body of the basket.
Technique and Materials: The faces are carved with fine, stylized features.
The style of the faces: The figures have heart-shaped faces, often associated with a serene and introspective expression. The eyes are represented by elongated slits under pronounced eyebrow arches.
Ritual elements: The inner view reveals the basket's internal structure, confirming its function as a container.
These reliquaries occupied a central place in the spiritual life of the populations concerned, serving as an interface between the world of the living and that of the ancestors.
