Marina di Capri, a pastel artwork by Valentino White (1909–1985), created in 1950–1960 in Italy, 80 by 62 cm, original edition, hand-signed, sold with frame, in good condition.
Description from the seller
The work depicts a view of the island of Capri; on the left lies a calm, transparent sea, while on the right an imposing rocky cliff dominated by the typical Mediterranean scrub dominates.
In the background of the cove, light-colored architectural structures can be seen where the light is warm and natural, illuminating the rocky profiles and enhancing their volumes.
The brushwork is tactile yet precise, influenced by the Impressionist painting inherited from his grandfather, the renowned English painter James Talmage White.
Biography.
White Valentino (Positano, 1909 – Ravello, 1985)
A painter of considerable talent, White Valentino showed from a young age a marked aptitude for painting and drawing, despite his father's initial resistance that prevented him from pursuing formal artistic studies.
Still very young, he moved to Capri, where he began working in professional photography. Alongside, he had the opportunity to refine his painting technique by following his grandfather's “indirect school,” the famous English painter James Talmage White.
During his life, Valentino lived in several significant places in Campania, including the slopes of Vesuvius in the municipality of Torre del Greco, and later Ravello, where he finally settled.
His artistic career gained important recognition in the 1950s, a period in which he established himself thanks to a series of highly successful exhibitions held in Rome.
Among the highlights of his exhibition activity is remembered his participation in the XII edition of the Interprovincial Art Show of the Fascist Syndicate of Fine Arts of Campania, held in Naples in 1942, where he presented the work Impression.
He spent the last years of his life in Rome, leaving a significant mark on the artistic landscape of his time.
