Carved walnut reliquary with a painting depicting a satirical subject – Black Forest style – 19th century

Rare and refined walnut wood reliquary finely carved, made in the 19th century in Black Forest style, with an oil painting on panel portraying a lively satirical genre scene.
The elegant architectural frame, richly carved with vegetal motifs, ornamental friezes and a lower medallion with a running hare, recalls the finest decorative production of the Alpine area between Switzerland, southern Germany and Tyrol. The pediment is enriched by a heraldic coat of arms, an additional mark of value of the composition.
In the center is set a painted panel depicting a doctor intent on prescribing or administering a enema to a patient, assisted by other characters. The scene, set in an interior domestic space, is characterized by a marked ironic and caricatured tone, typical of nineteenth-century genre painting, in which the figure of the physician and the therapeutic practices of the time become objects of satire.
The work fuses the excellence of wood carving with the narrative quality of the painting, constituting an unusual and sought-after example of period decorative furniture.
The frame preserves a pleasant antique patina and shows normal signs of wear consistent with the age of the piece.
