Description from the seller

Magnificent Antique French Mother-of-Pearl 'Porte-Monnaie Accordion' – Napoleon III / Early Art Nouveau period (ca. 1870-1890)

Very elegant and luxurious ladies' coin purse from the late 19th century. This type of refined fashion accessory was worn by the higher circles in France to carry coins, or bought as an exclusive souvenir at fashionable seaside resorts.

Exterior:
The outside consists of two thick, solid shields of high-quality natural mother-of-pearl. The mother-of-pearl exhibits a stunning iridescent glow with the characteristic pink and greenish tonal shifts (orient effect). The front features a very fine and deeply engraved, elegantly woven monogram with the initials 'KS' in a classic Victorian style, decorated with subtle hatching and foliage motifs. The back is kept entirely smooth to reveal the natural texture of the shell.

Interior & Construction:
The purse opens via a sturdy brass (yellow brass) frame with a smoothly operating press-stud clasp. The inside is lined with the original royal blue silk, divided into an ingenious accordion- or harmonica-system with multiple compartments. Centrally there is also an extra, separate lockable compartment with a metal flap for the smallest coins or gold pieces.

Exterior: In excellent antique condition. The mother-of-pearl is fully intact with no cracks, breaks, or chips. The engraving is razor-sharp and the brass edges fit perfectly.

Interior: In original used condition. As is usual with silk of over 130 years old, the fabric lining shows wear and fraying at the folds of the accordion system (see photos). The mechanical closures still function properly.

On the metal inner clasp is the French inscription:
BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.

This is a historic French patent mark. The letters stand for:

Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement
(Translated: Patented Without Government Guarantee)

For this purse it is a wonderful authenticity mark that the French origin and dating in the late 19th century are officially confirmed once again.

Dimensions: 2.7 x 7.2 x 5.5 cm
Weight: 60 g
