Beautiful and very refined hand-painted Russian-Orthodox icon on a solid wooden panel.
Dating from the early 19th century or earlier.
The icon depicts Saint Nicholas of Myra
Recognizable by his episcopal mitre and the richly adorned Gospel book in his left hand,
while with his right hand he makes the traditional gesture of blessing.
In the upper right corner Jesus Christ and the Mother of God (to the right in the clouds) are depicted, which refers to the Miracle of Nicaea.
Around the halo there is a Church Slavonic inscription.
Painting Style and Quality:
This object stands out for its exceptionally fine painting quality.
The saint’s face is rendered with great attention to detail, soft shading and psychological depth.
Also the details on the mitre and the Gospel book attest to the craftsmanship of a skilled icon painter.
The style shows the influence of 19th-century academicism in Tsarist Russia.
Technique: Egg tempera and gold and silver pigment on a gesso layer
