BIOGRAPHY OF THE ARTIST
Pau Roig y Estradé (Vilanova i la Geltrú, January 24, 1914 – October 24, 1994) was a Catalan painter.
Orphan from a very young age, he was taken in by an aunt of his.
From a young age, he already showed a certain aptitude for drawing. He attended the public school of Master Vicente Sorni and, together with two other fellow students, produced a magazine: Fortaleza. It contained texts and drawings.
The only artistic training Roig received was between 1929 and 1934 at the School of Arts and Trades of Vilanova, where Alexandre de Cabanyes offered some evening classes.
Additionally, besides working in the family business when he could, he used his free time to spend at the home of Joaquín Mir, accompanying the artist while he painted.
Mobilized in 1937 to join the front, there he encountered other landscapes which he used to draw along the way: Valencia, Ciudad Real...
Once he returned after the war, he began to relate with Enric C. Ricart, who helped him consolidate his aesthetic ideas.
He exhibited several times in Barcelona (1941, 1943, 1944), in Vilanova i la Geltrú (the municipality where much of his work is located: the Salón de Comisiones of the City Hall, at the Biblioteca Museo Víctor Balaguer, among others), in Madrid (1952 he was selected and took part in the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Madrid), etc. His work is characterized by a constant dedication and deepening in the landscape, often limited to Vilanova and its surroundings as well as the region.
