Description from the seller
Exceptionally Complete 19th-Century Antique Carat Weight Box (Trebuchet)
For sale: A museum-quality and nearly 100% complete weighing set for diamantaires and jewelers from the 19th century. This metric-precision instrument was used in historic diamond centers such as Amsterdam or Antwerp. The set is in an excellent, authentic condition and shines in its rare completeness.
Type: Antique pocket balance / carat weight box
Period: Late 19th century ca. 1870-1910 (for metric, from before 1913)
Key features and completeness
1. The Wooden Travel Case
Made from high-quality, shrinkage-free solid mahogany or walnut wood.
Smooth, rounded corners for comfortable pocket transport. Fully recessed high-quality brass hinges. Working metal push-button lock (latch). Original purple-blue velvet lining inside the carat weights.
2. The Hand Scale (Trebuchet)
Fully functional steel balance beam with central forks. Perfectly intact vertical zero-point needle (dial). Two original, slightly hollow metal weighing scales. Authentic fine green silk hanging cords.
3. The Complete Series of Carat Weights
Complete main series of square block weights: 32, 16, 8, 4, 3, 2 and 1 carat. Including the rare 3-carat weight. Various geometric fraction and lamella pieces for weights under 1 carat. 1 shiny lamella weight marked with '20' (dots).
4. The Original Accessory Including the Rare Loose Gem Tweezer with Built-in Scoop (pince à pelle). Made from steel/nickel silver with a brass scoop part. This component is missing in almost all comparable sets on the market.
Condition and Authenticity The set is in beautiful, unrestored condition with a fair, decades-long patina. There are no cracks in the wood or major damage to the mechanical parts. All weights and tools fit exactly in the handmade, specially milled compartments of the travel case.
Value and Bids. This object is a beautiful and unique collectible for enthusiasts of scientific instruments, antique weighing devices, or diamond history.
