Description from the seller

Otto Detlefsen (1886–1963) – Danish ceramic female figure – Denmark – ca. 1950–1960

Characteristic vintage ceramic female figure designed by the Danish ceramist Otto Detlefsen (1886–1963). The sculpture depicts a woman in traditional Scandinavian dress with a headscarf and is executed in the characteristic sober, expressive formal language for which Detlefsen is known.

The figure is made of stoneware and finished with a warm sandy glaze, combined with deep brown to blue-black accents. The hand-engraved decorations on the clothing reference traditional Scandinavian textile motifs and give the object a distinctly artisanal character.

Although this piece is unsigned, several identical executions are known on the Scandinavian collector market and are consistently attributed to Otto Detlefsen. The design, glaze, and decorative finish are in full agreement with these well-known examples.

Otto Detlefsen worked during the first half of the twentieth century as a Danish ceramist and gained fame for his expressive stoneware figures, portraits, and folkloristic sculptures. His work belongs to the characteristic Danish studio ceramics and is valued for the combination of simplicity, craftsmanship, and sculptural strength.

Condition:
This figure is in a pre-owned state with some patina from age and use. Some signs of wear appropriate to the age.

Dimensions: H 11.5 cm x W 5.0 cm x D 5.0 cm

Weight: 208 grams

A special and decorative figure with a strong presence — very suitable for enthusiasts of Scandinavian design, studio ceramics, and mid-century folk art. Very scarce and hard to find and it therefore falls into the higher price segment.
